Sleep Apnea Appliances
Sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder, can lead to health complications if left untreated. The most common treatments for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy and oral appliance therapy. CPAP involves providing continuous positive airway pressure to keep the airway open during sleep, while oral appliances, such as mandibular advancement devices (MAD) and tongue retaining devices, help maintain open airways. These appliances are suitable for mild to moderate OSA cases and are considered more travel-friendly than CPAP machines. However, they may not be as effective for severe sleep apnea and may require more frequent replacement.
Many people avoid using CPAP despite its proven effectiveness as a treatment for sleep apnea because they find it uncomfortable. While CPAP can significantly improve sleep quality and overall health, the discomfort experienced by some individuals often leads them to seek alternative treatments, such as oral appliance therapy, to manage their condition more comfortably. Oral appliance therapy has emerged as a viable alternative to CPAP, particularly for patients who prefer it and adhere to the treatment. Studies have shown that mandibular advancement splints (MAS) can be effective in treating OSA.
Dr. Zachary Chandler has advanced training in sleep apnea appliances. He specializes in oral appliance therapy, making him well-equipped to treat sleep apnea effectively. When considering oral appliance therapy as a treatment option, a dentist evaluation is necessary to determine candidacy, and the device is custom-made for the patient’s specific needs. Collaborating with a sleep specialist ensures the best treatment plan for each individual, optimizing the effectiveness of oral appliance therapy in managing sleep apnea.
