Dental Specialists : Why do I have to see one?
This is how we are keeping you and your smiles healthy.
At times the success of your oral health may require you to be referred to a dental specialist. Dental specialists have completed additional training to focus on a specific area of dentistry. This can be between 2 to 4 years. When Dr. Sanders or Dr. Chandler refers you to a specialist, it is because he wants you to have the best possible dentist for the job.
Dental Specialists
Orthodontist – A patient is referred to an orthodontist for misalignments with the jaw and/or teeth. Orthodontists treat both children and adults. If there are extra teeth, missing teeth, or crowding , an orthodontist will treat the patient with solutions like traditional braces, Invisalign, and/or retainers.
Pediatric Dentist – These dentists work exclusively with children. Much of their additional training focuses on building a positive experience for children. They work with children to build a base line for good oral health care and many work with patients who have special needs.
Oral Surgeon – Oral surgeons specialize in the surgical treatment of the mouth. They remove wisdom teeth, place dental implants, and biopsy suspicious spots in the mouth. They also offer sedation to make the surgical experience as pleasant as possible.
Endodontist – These dentist specialize root canal in treatment – a procedure that treats the infected tissues within a tooth. With new technologies, Endodontist can complete a root canal quickly and comfortably for patients.
Periodontist – A dental specialist that focuses on caring for your gums and the supporting tissues and structure around your teeth. In most cases, a referral to a periodontist is made to help patients treat advanced periodontal (gum or bone) disease. They also are trained to place dental implants.
While it may seem like an inconvenience to visit a dental specialist, it is in your best interest to do so when referred. Just like you wouldn’t visit your primary care physician for knee replacement surgery, a specialist has the additional training and experience to provide you with specialized treatment to help you achieve optimal oral health.
